A series hybrid drivetrain for e-bikes consists of a generator, a battery, an electric motor, and a controller and/or VCU. It can power vehicles with two and more wheels and also synchronize these vehicles with trailers and auxiliary devices. It can allow digitally assisted adaptive steering, reducing mechanical complexity.
Terms that are also used for such systems are “digital chain” or “electric chain” or just “chainless drivetrain”. Currently, most bikes operating with a series hybrid are multitrack bikes with three or four wheels. There are also two-wheelers, but the advantages here are not as prominent as on multitrack bikes.
Several players have entered this new market, and the riding experience keeps improving. In the future, vehicle-based data collection and processing will ensure a unique and tailored riding experience. But can it really beat a chain or belt?
